Why not petition Mirabilis and AOL to make them move to Jabber, by asking them to open their ICQ/AIM closed networks, and to join the open, public, federated JabberX/MPP network?
The could put up a transport/gateway on their servers, that lets their users communicate with Jabber/XMPP. Thus their users would have Jabber ID, for example in the following form: xmpp:123456@icq.com and xmpp:nickname@aim.com
